I was so fortunate to have the opportunity to play for the Moose Monarchs from 1986-1988.  Our teams had tremendous success.  Several of my Monarchs teammates and I went on to play college baseball largely due to the skill development and exposure we received during our days of American Legion Baseball.  Most importantly we made lifelong memories and friendships.

Benefiting so much from my experience as a player in the program I felt the best way that I could give back was by coaching.  I coached the Knights for 2 seasons and Monarchs for 5 seasons, quickly realizing the more I tried to give back the more I received.

Thank you Big League Baseball and all of the people who have contributed in a positive way over the last 40 + years!!

— Rob McDonnell , Moose Monarchs player 1986-1988, K of C Knights coach 1989 & 2014, Moose Monarchs coach 1994, 2001-2004

“I have been fortunate to be part of the Medicine Hat American Legion Baseball program both as a player and a coach. As a player, I received outstanding coaching from former alumni who created an environment that challenged me to grow both on and off the field. My experience in the program helped prepare me for college baseball and inspired me to return and give back as a coach, helping develop the next generation of players. I am proud of the lasting role this program has played in my athletic and personal development.”

— Rob Aberle, Monarchs 1996-1999, Knights coach 2003-2005

"My time in the program was immensely enjoyable. We were fortunate to benefit from exceptional coaching, top-notch facilities, and dedicated volunteers working behind the scenes. I carry with me wonderful memories and have learned invaluable lessons in hard work, discipline, and teamwork – and, of course, some baseball. This experience paved the way for my further playing career in college (PBA, Wayne State College) and summer ball with the Lethbridge Bulls. Moreover, it established many of the work habits I rely on today. I consider myself truly fortunate to have been part of this organization."

— David Muryn, McCoy High School, Knights and Monarchs 1993-1997

“Wearing that uniform was always my goal, and I’m proud I had the chance to do so, even if only for one season. The camps, alumni involvement, and players giving back created something bigger than the game itself — it made baseball in our city feel like a true community. Big League Baseball is an institution in Medicine Hat, and one I hope continues to benefit players for years to come.”

— Matt Serfas, Medicine Hat Knights, 1999

"Playing and coaching in the American Legion program brought me a true sense of community. The American legion baseball community is unmatched. I believe there is long-term value in being part of a longstanding program like this. I benefited greatly from it, and I believe future players will too.

I received a scholarship from the American Legion program, which helped support my post-secondary studies. I had a summer job through the American Legion program which did the same. But the sense of belonging and commitment to the baseball community is where, in hindsight, I gained the most value. When we hosted tournaments (and sometimes all on the same day) I did field-work, coached, umpired, ran the scoreboard, and chipped in wherever else to ensure the success of a tournament. I did this because I felt like I belonged to this baseball community and wanted it to succeed. This commitment and work ethic, of course, carried into my life in many ways outside of baseball.

I’m a better teammate, professional, employee, partner, because I belonged to a tight knit baseball community through an important developmental point in my life.”

— Lane Aman, Knights in 2012, Monarchs in 2013-2015
